The Artists

Karen Green

Botanical Artist, Artist and Art Teacher

After Karen finished her Art Foundation at Brighton & Hove City College, she gained a 1st class honours degree in Costume for Screen & Stage at The Bournemouth Arts Institute in 2007. This degree and time spent travelling the world led the subject of her oil paintings to focus on the human figure, their clothes and cultural costume. In 2008 she began her PGCE Teaching qualification and taught for two years in a middle school, teaching textiles and art.

Her art has always focused on the natural form, from the human figure to plants and nature. Working in a variety of media from oil, textiles and water-colours, she exhibits regularly around Gloucestershire in solo and shared shows. Her work at this exhibition focuses purely on her love of plants, botany and water-colour.

Gerald Crittle

Abstract Artist

Gerald paints in mixed media; this includes a wide range of materials to create texture and unusual patterns. He enjoys experimenting with different materials to create unique and interesting paintings. His paintings are not pre-planned, he starts by applying texture and layers of paint and from this shapes appear that become the focus of the work and determine the final colours. He hopes to create something that you find interesting.

Gerald is a member of the Gloucester Society of Artists and he will be exhibiting at their Summer Exhibition in Painswick between 18 – 27 August.

He is also taking part in Art In The City in Gloucester exhibiting in Debenhams from 9 July until 28 July.

Ann Sohn-Rethel

Potter and Painter

Ann studied ceramics part-time in the 1980s at Sir John Cass School of Art, London. Since moving to Cheltenham in 2001 she has devoted her working time to pottery and has a garden studio. She likes to make pots for everyday use that are lovely to look at and to handle.

The red earthenware clay Ann uses comes from Stoke on Trent and she likes the finished pot to retain the feel of the clay from which it was made; also the combination of conscious design and randomness, to which the art of making pots lends itself.

Ann decorates the pots with natural mineral oxides – copper, cobalt and iron – in different combinations on a ground of white slip. This allows the red colour of the clay to shine through.
